be choosing just one design to go with!
Tile & Stone
Tiles have been around for over 4,000
years. Beautiful tiled surfaces have been
found in the oldest pyramids and ancient
Greek ruins. Decorative tile has come a
long way since then. Today's tiles offer a
wide range of versatility in terms of style.
Natural stone, slate, ceramic, and por-
celain tiles are extremely energy efficient.
In the cold winter months, tiles absorb
sunlight and act as a natural heat bank. In
the evening the tiles re-radiate that stored
heat. In the summer the tiles soak up the
heat during the day to make the home
cooler--which is great for Mainer's with-
out air-conditioning units. If you keep the
sun off of your tile floors in the summer
they'll remain nice and cool.
And if you choose to go with slate you
can shop locally. The "Central Maine Slate
Belt" extends from Waterville to Brown-
ville Junction, with most of the slate quar-
rying today happening around Monson in
southern Piscataquis County.
Much like granite countertops, tiles
are extremely durable. Tiles are resistant
to fading, weathering, and, with a little el-
bow grease, will look brand new no matter
how old they are. Tile and stone flooring
have become the most popular options in
flooring thanks to their durability and va-
riety of choices.
If someone in your family has asth-
ma or allergies, tiles are a great choice
(rather than carpet) to reduce symptoms.
Tiles also do not fade over time with ex-
posure to sunlight, are not generally af-
fected by moisture, are resistant to stains
and household chemicals, and are a low
maintenance surface.
Natural stone tile comes in a variety
of shades of browns, pinks, greens, grays,
and blacks and a variety of shapes and
sizes. Using natural stone tiles in your
home is a great way to go green and bring
a taste of the outdoors inside. Get creative
in your use of color and texture through-
out your house. Using tile is a relatively
easy way to give your home an interior
face-lift.
