UMaine athletics raises $30K for Black Bear scholarships, and sends Paul Hammond home dancing.
More than $30,000 was raised for the Black Bear Scholarship Fund at the February 19 Super Suppah. That really is the big deal. But try telling that to Paul Hammond, winner of the $10,000 prize at the end of the evening.

Held at the Bangor Civic Center, the Super Suppah was the University of Maine Athletics Black Bear Board of Advisors’ third annual event, and its most successful to date. The ticketing of the event—$275/couple with a 100 ticket limit, with a $10,000 drawing that night—makes for an excited turnout and an effective fundraiser. In its three years of existence, the Super Suppah has raised more than $75,000 for athletic scholarships.

Besides ticket sales, funds were also raised by a silent and live auction, and a raffle for a weeklong stay at Hilton Head. Many local businesses and community members donated items for the event, so every ticket purchaser went home with a prize, speedily delivered by the student athletes in attendance.

Prizes aside, UMaine athletics really were the star of the show. From the head coaches and student athletes mingling with the crowd to the Maine Steiners leading the group in the Maine Stein Song, the school spirit was as unmistakable as the giant black bear in the lobby.

The Super Suppah was underwritten by Merrill Bank, and Cyr Bus Lines and Darling’s Auto also assisted with sponsorships. Barb Brown Dalton of WLBZ-TV chaired this year’s event; UMaine trustee Jim Mullen served as its comical MC.
