According to the Maine Center for Nonprofits, Maine nonprofits employ over 70,000 individuals and pay over $2 billion in wages to Maine workers. But what is a nonprofit?
Maine’s “nonprofit sector” describes Maine institutions and organizations that are not government agencies (such as the Department of Human Services or the University of Maine System) nor for-profit businesses (such as your local bank, pizza shop, or paper mill). A nonprofit’s income must be used solely to support its operations and mission.
There are more than 25 nonprofit classifications, but they can be thought of in three basic groups: public benefit (such as hospitals, colleges), mutual benefit (such as business leagues, associations, special interest clubs), and religious organizations.
While every nonprofit organization is exempt from taxes, only donations to public benefit and religious organizations, known under the IRS code as 501(c)(3) organizations, are tax deductible.
Following is a list of the top 501(c)(3) public benefit organizations, ranked by revenue, that are headquartered in our seven county Bangor metro region. The source for these revenue figures is each nonprofit’s IRS forms, which public benefit 501(c)(3)s are required to file and make public. (Religious organizations are exempt from this filing requirement, and, hence, are not part of this list.)
Does a list by revenue tell us a great deal about the relative importance or effectiveness of these organizations? Not necessarily. Consider that many of the public benefit nonprofits central to our area’s cultural fabric run on small budgets. And high revenues do not necessarily mean an organization is rolling in extra cash: Area hospitals that are at the top of the revenue list, for example, sometimes operate at a net loss.
Still, with a total revenue of over $1.8 billion for these 40 organizations, the list does indicate one thing: In our region, nonprofits are, pardon the expression, big business.
