Nearly 700 UMaine students came to the Field House in April to “do laps” in support of cancer research. Thanks to the imagination of its organizers, it was not only a financial success—the students raised more than $50,000 for the American Cancer Society—it was also a great deal of fun.
The rules were simple—participating teams had to have at least one member walking at all times and each team member had to pay $10 for their relay T-shirt. But the all-night event was spirited with entertainment from live music to a stand-up comic to a hypnotist to a version of the TV game show Deal or No Deal. Themed laps required costume changes—including Hawaiian, UMaine, and Disney attire. While smiles ruled the night, no one ever forgot why they were there. This was most poignant during the Survivors Lap—as participating cancer survivors, wearing purple sashes, circled the track, everyone in the room stood and applauded.
