Maine Coast Memorial Hospital's annual Benefit

Sightings

Maine Coast Memorial Hospital's annual benefit, the Poinsettia Ball, is a flowering success.
Once upon a time, hospital improvements only came one way: by private donations. The 14th annual Poinsettia Ball, held each year in Ellsworth to benefit Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, keeps that oldfashioned, everyone-pitches-in tradition alive and hopping.

The December 3 event was presented by longtime friends of the hospital, R. H.  Foster Energy, LLC, and Machias Savings Bank. Both companies have helped the Ellsworth hospital raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in essential funds over the life of the ball. Numerous other companies and indivduals pitched in with cash, gifts in kind (like the 500-plant poinsettia tree, donated by Albert and Barbara Harmon), and the "sweat equity" of event planners, decorators, setup crew, and waitstaff.

One of the most important contributions to this popular fundraising shindig, however, is joy. Acadia Brass Ensemble provided the holiday fanfare; then Brian Catell and the Jump City Jazz Band cranked out the tunes
. With $30,000 raised for the central nursing station of a hospital with 118,000 patient visits last year, the 490 Poinsettia Ball guests had a lot to celebrate.
