Bad Is Good

Bangor Metro photo of the Bikers Against Diabetes Third-Annual BAD ride in Rockland
Bikers Against Diabetes revved up almost Twelve Thousand dollars on its third-annual BAD ride in Rockland, Maine.

Don’t let the black leather and tattoos fool you—those B.A.D. riders rumbling through Rock-land this summer are a mighty band of do-gooders.

For the third year in a row, regional bikers took in 100 miles of the Maine coast to raise money for diabetes research. Bikers Against Diabetes (B.A.D.) raised over $11,735 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to assist in its work to find a cure for diabetes. (In the U.S., about one child per hour is diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, also known as Type 1 diabetes.)

Led by event chairs Jon and Pam Paquette, the B.A.D. ride brought in gifts from Maine to California and Canada. The day’s festivities also included a pig roast, live music from the rock-and-roll band “No Clue,” and raffles galore.

The B.A.D. ride got plenty of attention from area folks, who cheered and waved as the bikers rolled by. Riders like Dave Hubbard and the American Legion Riders of Topsham, Tommy Jordan of Ellsworth, and Becky Butler of South Thomaston could sit tall as they cruised, knowing they’d raised $2,156, $1,635, and $1,200, respectively. They could also safely work up an appetite: They and two others each received 25 pounds of lobster, complements of area fishermen, for raising the most donations.
