Participants in the 7th annual Beach to Beach Swim for Breast Cancer
Nearly 100 volunteers swam up to two miles to make a splash for breast cancer protection and early detection.
It was no ordinary day at the beach. This August day included 95 swimmers and 40 kayaking safety spotters, who swam or paddled to raise funds for the 7th Annual Beach to Beach Swim for Breast Cancer. The fundraising swim, held at Jenkins Beach at Green Lake in Dedham, raised more than $13,500 in pledges and donations for Caring Connections, a women’s health program of the Bangor Y and Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Children as young as 8 years old and adults in a variety of ages all volunteered their time and water skills to raise money for Caring Connections, which provides breast health education and screening, diagnostic and treatment services to uninsured and underinsured women in eastern Maine. While their time in the water swimming up to two miles was a fun, healthy way to make a difference, there is a serious undercurrent motivating this annual fundraiser: Many of the participants and donors have been touched by breast cancer in some way. In fact, more than 900 women in Maine are diagnosed with breast cancer and close to 200 women die from the disease each year.

Money raised from this year’s Beach to Beach Swim for Breast Cancer will help provide no-cost breast health services to women who qualify for the services. Proceeds also help fund the eight local EncorePlus breast cancer support groups.
