Area folks "shop" for a good cause--a new public library in Orono.
When the Orono Public Library Foundation held its first annual Gala Auction in June to benefit its $1.8-million fundraising campaign for a new library, it made a decision: auction off good stuff. The gala was held at the Buchanan Alumni House on the University of Maine campus; attendees had a blast bidding on everything from a hockey shirt signed by the entire Black Bears team to a week at a cottage on Prince Edward Island. There were Maine-centric items, such as a painting by local artist Michael Lewis, a golf weekend at Sugarloaf, and a day of fishing with a Maine Guide, as well as many one-of-a-kind treasures, including a signed copy of The Godfather script.

The list of goodies went on: fire truck birthday parties, Red Sox packages, a wine party for six . . .  all made sweeter by food by Ann Marie’s Catering and music by Orono musicians Dan and Nate Lesser, Jessamy Luthin, Nikolai Renedo, Max Winter, and Jae Bradley. Sarah Kenney, event chair, reported proceeds of over $13,000
. The Rock Team of ERA Dawson-Bradford, and the Noyes Law Office T&B Title sponsored the event; John Cheney donated his services as auctioneer.

We hop this "Best of '08" exercise will inspire you to take the time to go over your year's accomplishments, at work and at home, professionally and personally. It's good medicine!

Soapbox Derby: Holiday Wish List

It's been an eventful year in the world, in our state, and for Faircloth and Fish. They've hashed it out over candidates, and opined about their political mentors, congressional earmarks, and the fairness doctrine. This month, we asked them to show their softer side with this question.

Kids and Guns
