When the Bangor Humane Society stepped in to care for 20 dogs rescued by authorities from abuse and neglect, the expenses totaled over $45,000—yet only about one-third of that was reimbursed by the state. For a lean operation like BHS, that spells crisis. So when Bobby Russell at WKIT became aware of the financial strain, the team at the Bangor radio station made that Friday a “pay to play” day, with listeners making a minimum $10 donation to have a requested tune played on the air. Listeners responded so generously that nearly $3,700 was raised to help the humane society keep up with its important animal rescue work.
